As an adult on the Autism Spectrum marketing and raising awareness of the Autism Spectrum with my own experiences as an adult and also for other adults on the Autism Spectrum attracts a different kind of marketing approach. I find it very difficult and virtually impossible to get any good or positive news stories through the media. I have had on ocassions to contact newspapers and television programs to correct and rectify stories which just have a negative message to them. When I have tried to contact media outlets, I have received some positive responses but not as many as I would intend.
The biggest problem it seems is getting the direct message out there about adults on the Autism Spectrum. As I have repeatedly mentioned is the high unemployment statistics in the Autism adult population and the alarming mental health and social isolation issues. It seems that no matter how hard I push to get the message out there the more difficult it seems for media outlets to actually listen. Quite simply I want to see more positive stories. There is a lot of work happening in the background by myself and others to overcome some of the challenges and difficulties that affect persons on the Autism Spectrum directly. There are also the positive stories. Adults on the Autism Spectrum working in software testing, some successfully but few in employment, some with extra-ordinary abilities and it just seems that the Australian media just show no interest. I also was disappointed by media personality Karl Stefanovic showing no interest in the book I just wrote.
I am not out for publicity or fame. To be honest the very concept would just stress me. What I would like to see is greater tolerance, understanding and awareness. Added to this I want to see positive stories which help the wider community to understand the existence of the Autism Spectrum rather than more so in some instances turning a blind eye to it. I work very hard to raise awareness of the Autism Spectrum in adults. I have some adults contact me asking me to not give up and that I am helping them. I also am connecting more adults from around the globe and this is a positive.
Since this blog has existed it has received close to 20 000 hits within a very short period. Although not a large number it demonstrates that people are prepared to read and hopefully become better informed. Over the coming months I intend to raise more awarness and speak at more events. The book I have written is doing well also and in times it will reach more libraries. For now like always I would encourage you to follow the work I do and even follow my twitter page by visiting GarryBurge on Twitter. You're support really makes a difference!
