Today the meeting at the University of Queensland Asperger@UQ was very productive. I met with Damian who is doing his PhD and another Aspie, Sam at Merlos Cafe. Despite meeting for approximately 1 hour and a half, we came away from the meeting feeling a sense of support in that we could share our experiences and obtain support when dealing with Asperger Syndrome.
It is good to know that the University of Queensland now has a Psychology Clinic which provides support for adults on the Autism Spectrum. You don't have to belong to the University of Queensland to attend as a staff or student but simply double clicking on the link above on the title of this post can provide you with more information. At the meeting we discussed the following
1. The need for more services and support for adults
2. A support group for adults in Brisbane not just for UQ but for adults in Brisbane
3. Damian's PhD into approaching schools regarding the Autism Spectrum in adolescents
4. Other issues concerning adults
It would be good if UQ could have an alliance with Trinity College in Dublin with the Asperger Adults group there.
What we encourage or want is for more adults on the Autism Spectrum to visit our meetings which are the second and forth Friday of the month. I will be working with Damian to ensure that we find the needs to allow the group to support adults but for now we are all happy in that we can share our own experiences in a supportive and non threatening environment. We hope to see more adults attend our meetings to obtain support in a non threatening environment and to also obtain services fro UQ Psychology Clinic in counseling and eventual support group which may provide boards games i.e scrabble, chess etc.
