Aspergers@UQ

Dear Readers

Just an update on how things are progressing with Aspergers@UQ.  Yesterday we had our meeting and thanks to Damian we had a room to meet in.  Damian Santomauro is an adult on the Autism Spectrum undertaking a PhD in the Autism Spectrum and besides Damian we had approximately 10 people turn up.

The group meets in a non threatening environment. We discuss various topics from not understanding NT's (Neuro Typicals) as well as just talking about whatever is on our minds.  Soon we hope also to play board games but the idea of the group is to more or less avoid the confusion and over sensory issues associated with Autism.

I think it is important that the group meets as people on the Autism Spectrum including myself find it hard to connect with the wider community and be understood.  Often non Autistic people can be confusing and more importantly there needs to be mechanisms and support to assist with some of these difficulties.

The group is also important for there is no real centrally based group in Brisbane and meeting on a university campus ensures that proximity and location are not issues.  Also the room on campus has lots of space and a means of supporting more people but I think finding a facilator is also important to just help things a long a bit.

Our next meeting is on Friday 18th November where we will meet at Merlos Cafe at the University of Queensland and then meet in the room shortly afterwards. For more information about the group or to visit please visit my website www.garryburge.com
