With more and more diagnosis of Autism occurring should there be a cure for Autism? It seems that for adults now diagnosed with Autism and children finding a cure would cause us to feel at a loss or forgotten about. Finding a cure concerns me in that we would be eliminating people who provide innovation and diversity within our society. Rather than find a cure, there needs to be a balanced approach in firstly providing awareness of the Autism Spectrum and to also allow and encourage survival skills for those affected by the Autism Spectrum.
I believe it is wrong of people to blame vaccines and trying to find a cure when more simply society needs better coping strategies to deal with certain situations. It is necessary that early intervention and more importantly the school is a means of ensuring steps for better management. Some behaviours in persons on the Autism Spectrum are difficult to manage and the answer is what can be done? There is no easy answer but the most important process is to have awareness to reach the wider community. Tolerance and understanding are required more so than an us and them approach. I believe it is wrong for Aspies to want the world to be all one way and it is not proper for NT's to want to change Aspies. What is more needed is for early intervention to provide coping strategies to deal with behavioural problems and for the medical profession to stop seeing everything as either anatomical or biological. The brains of Autistic people need to be researched more to find out how a person on the Autism Spectrum thinks and feels.
I personally believe Jenny McCarthy and other vocal people in the United States are creating a major disservice to Autism by wanting to find a cure to Autism and blaming vaccines.
